Making Girls Sports Great Again!
By Eileen Griffin-Ray
President Donald Trump (R) signed an Executive Order banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, ABC reports. The order is titled, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” and fulfills a campaign promise made by Trump.
Women and girls will be allowed to have their own bathrooms, locker rooms, and single gender spaces once again. Biological males will no longer be able to compete against biological females in school athletic programs.
“Under the Trump administration, we will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure and cheat our women and our girls,” Trump said at the signing ceremony surrounded by women and girls, both athletes and coaches.
An Executive Order issued by former President Joe Biden (D) at the beginning of his presidency mandated that biological males who claim to be female should be treated the same as females, Heartland Daily News reported at the time. The order allowed access to the playing field as well as locker rooms and bathrooms.
Female athletes and coaches interviewed by Heartland Daily News expressed concern, anger, and frustration at Biden’s directive. They feared for the safety of the girls and mourned for the lost opportunities to compete and win.
Many women athletes remembered when there were no opportunities to participate in sports. Even after Title IV was signed in 1972, it took several years before teams formed and girls found their way to the playing field.
It took several years and many moms leading the way in the 1970s and 1980s to make girls sports a priority for schools and communities. After finally creating their own space in the world of sports, the Biden order crushed the dreams of talented female athletes who knew they would be unable to compete against biological males.
“Anyone not blinded by the cultural Klieg lights can see how athletes born male are beating athletes born female when allowed to compete against them,” Cal Thomas wrote for Fox at the time. “This is political correctness at its worst and can deny women athletes scholarships, recognition, and commercial endorsements.”
Several states fought Biden’s Executive Order. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita sued the Biden administration over the order.
“We cannot effectively protect women’s rights — or even their physical safety — if we refuse to acknowledge there are in fact two sexes, male and female–and ONLY two sexes,” Rokita said in a press release. “We cannot function effectively as a republic if we deny the basic facts of creation.”
Trump has returned girls sports to girl athletes. Girls will be safer if they no longer are forced to play sports with their typically bigger, faster, and stronger biological male counterparts.
“Finally, common sense has walked back in the building,” says Micah Valentine, Kennewick School Board Vice President and father of four girls. “I am thankful that President Trump has the guts to do what everyone knows, deep in their core, is right.”
Valentine says while he welcomes this news on the national front, he would like to see the state of Washington take the same common-sense approach.
“Reykdal and others in state leadership roles are busy fighting to keep criminals on the street and boys playing on the same field as girls.”
Trump has made girls sports great again. Washington state has not yet received the memo.
